Violence at Sri Lanka Prison Claims Multiple Lives

A violent incident at a prison in Negombo, Sri Lanka, has led to the deaths of at least 20 individuals and left more than 100 others injured. The clashes began on Sunday and persisted into Monday, according to local media and police reports.

The Negombo prison is situated approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital. A source from the local hospital informed Al Jazeera that the fatalities included 16 inmates and four prison guards. Pushpa Gamlath, the director of Negombo hospital, reported that they had received 23 bodies and treated over 100 injured individuals.

Police spokesperson Chandana Herath confirmed the occurrence of clashes within the prison and acknowledged the resulting fatalities but did not provide additional specifics about the incident. The exact cause of the violence remains unclear at this time.

Media footage broadcast by Derana TV depicted a significant police presence outside the prison's entrance. A police bus was seen leaving the facility, transporting injured inmates, some of whom were lying on the floor of the vehicle.

The situation at Negombo prison has drawn attention to the challenges faced by the Sri Lankan prison system, particularly regarding overcrowding and management issues, which may contribute to tensions within these facilities.
