Mexico Seeks Legal Action in U.S. Over Immigration-Related Deaths

Mexico has announced its intention to ask U.S. prosecutors to file criminal charges after a series of incidents left more than a dozen Mexican citizens dead during U.S. immigration operations. This move comes in the wake of a recent incident where a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a raid in Houston on July 7.

President Claudia Sheinbaum made the announcement on Monday, stating that official requests were being submitted to U.S. authorities. This decision marks a significant step in Mexico's response to the fatalities, which have occurred since President Donald Trump resumed office last year.

Call for Solidarity and Justice

During a press briefing, President Sheinbaum urged all political parties and the broader Mexican society to unite in support of the affected citizens in the United States. She stressed that the Mexican government should not remain silent on these matters, as they involve potential violations of human rights. "We must raise our voices when there are human rights violations against our fellow citizens," she asserted.

Despite these firm statements, Sheinbaum clarified that Mexico's actions are not intended to incite conflict with the U.S. However, she emphasized the importance of addressing these incidents to uphold justice for the deceased.

Escalation in Diplomatic Tensions

The announcement of criminal charge requests represents Mexico's strongest action to date regarding the deaths linked to Trump's immigration policies. Mexican officials have characterized some of these deaths as homicides, yet previous diplomatic protests have not yielded any changes in response from U.S. authorities.

This legal request comes at a time of heightened tension between the two nations. Since his return to office, President Trump has applied economic pressure on Mexico through tariffs and has withheld the renewal of key trade agreements. Additionally, there have been controversial moves, such as authorizing CIA operations against Mexican drug cartels.

Balancing Cooperation and Sovereignty

Despite these diplomatic challenges, President Sheinbaum has maintained a strategy of cooperation with the U.S. on issues like drug trafficking and migration, while firmly asserting Mexico's sovereignty. This balanced approach has contributed to a high approval rating for Sheinbaum, standing at approximately 68 percent domestically.

Foreign Affairs Minister Roberto Velasco confirmed on Thursday that the government is following through with its plans to request legal action in the U.S. He reiterated that these measures are necessary to address the serious nature of the incidents and to seek accountability for the deaths.
