European Lawmakers Seek Inquiry into FIFA's Infantino

Members of the European Parliament are advocating for an investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino in light of the organization's decision to lift a suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun, potentially influenced by US President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, a group of European lawmakers initiated a call for a probe into Infantino's involvement in the decision, as reported by Euronews. This request follows FIFA's unusual decision to reverse Balogun's suspension, which had been imposed after he received a red card in the US team's match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1. Traditionally, such an offense would result in the player missing the subsequent match.

However, FIFA overturned this suspension ahead of the US's match against Belgium on Monday, a decision that came after Trump made a personal appeal to Infantino, with whom he has maintained a friendly relationship over the years. FIFA has stated that the decision was made by its disciplinary committee, marking the first time in modern World Cup history that a red card has not led to a suspension.

Push for Transparency

European lawmakers have expressed serious concerns over possible political interference, urging football associations across the European Union to request a formal review of the process by FIFA. UEFA, Europe's governing football body, criticized the decision as "unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable."

Trump admitted to asking FIFA to reconsider the suspension, describing the red card as "horrible." He clarified that he did not demand a specific outcome and acknowledged that he could not dictate FIFA's actions. "I think it [the suspension] would have left a big stain," Trump commented, stressing that both the US and Belgium should field their best players.

Despite Balogun's participation, the US was defeated by Belgium 4-1 and subsequently eliminated from the World Cup.

Accusations of Injustice

European Parliament members Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang issued a joint statement condemning FIFA's decision to alter the rules mid-tournament as "a disgrace and a perversion of justice." They criticized Infantino for allegedly bowing to pressure from the Trump administration, a sentiment shared by 35 other lawmakers who have joined their petition.

"The essence of sport lies in its impartial and transparent rules," the lawmakers stated, emphasizing that succumbing to political pressure undermines the fairness of the sport. They questioned the integrity of FIFA's decision-making process in this context.

Infantino defended his conversation with Trump, asserting that he informed the US president that FIFA's independent judicial bodies handled the matter. "That is how FIFA's system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold," Infantino said.

Infantino, a Swiss national, has fostered strong ties with Trump, having awarded him a "FIFA Peace Prize" last year, a newly established honor.
