Renewed Attacks Target Russian Capital
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has seen a notable escalation, with Ukrainian drones successfully striking a Moscow oil refinery for the second occasion this week. Concurrently, Russia launched a barrage of missiles towards Kyiv, Ukraine's capital. These military actions occur amidst Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's intensified diplomatic efforts to garner support from the United States and European nations in pursuit of a peace agreement to end the protracted war.
Russia's Ministry of Defence reported on Thursday that its air defense systems intercepted a substantial number of Ukrainian drones, totaling 555, across several regions overnight. Nearly 200 of these unmanned aerial vehicles were reportedly neutralized as they approached the vicinity of the Russian capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that multiple drones had impacted an oil refinery. Sobyanin stated, "Air defense forces continue to repel a massive attack. Several drones managed to reach the Moscow oil refinery," adding that a shopping center also sustained minor damage.
Impact on Russian Energy Infrastructure
The recent attack on the oil facility marks the second such incident within the week. A prior drone assault on Tuesday had reportedly halted operations at the refinery, according to Reuters. This repeated targeting of Russian energy infrastructure contributes to a worsening fuel crisis within the country. Yulia Shapovalova, reporting from Kazan, highlighted the strategic importance of the refinery, noting that it supplies approximately 40 percent of the petrol and other oil products to Moscow's multi-million population. She further reported that the facility remained ablaze, with emergency services actively working to extinguish the fires.
In the surrounding Moscow region, the drone attack also caused damage to a high-rise residential building, an industrial facility, and several private residences, as confirmed by the regional governor. Moscow's busiest airport, Sheremetyevo, temporarily suspended flights and initiated evacuations, with some individuals seeking shelter in the car park, according to a statement from the airport authorities.
Russian Retaliation and Ukrainian Defenses
In response to the Ukrainian strikes, Kyiv experienced its second Russian air attack this week, with ballistic missiles being deployed against the Ukrainian capital. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, urged residents to remain in safe locations until the air raid alert concluded, stating via Telegram, "The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles." Additionally, authorities in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy reported one fatality resulting from a drone attack.
Al Jazeera's Audrey MacAlpine, reporting from Kyiv, indicated that at least 239 drones and seven ballistic missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight, impacting nine different locations. She noted that Ukraine claimed to have intercepted the majority of these incoming projectiles. Earlier in the week, a significant Russian attack on Kyiv tragically resulted in 11 deaths and caused damage to a 1,000-year-old monastery, a UNESCO-listed site, drawing strong condemnation from European leaders. Russia, however, denied responsibility for striking the monastery.
Diplomatic Push for Peace
These intensified military actions coincide with President Zelenskyy's concerted efforts to pressure Russia into negotiating an end to the conflict, which has now spanned over four years. Zelenskyy disclosed that he engaged in discussions with former US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other leaders from G7 countries to coordinate strategies for resolving the war.
During their discussions, G7 leaders collectively pledged to bolster Ukraine's air defenses and intensify economic pressure on Moscow's war economy. This includes implementing stricter sanctions on Russia's oil and gas sectors. Trump, speaking to reporters, affirmed his commitment to do "whatever I can" to facilitate an end to the conflict. Zelenskyy expressed satisfaction with the commitments received from the G7, specifically mentioning "more air defence missiles along with licenses to produce them, and a winter support package."
In a post on X, Zelenskyy underscored the critical role of US support, stating, "Importantly, the US is ready to provide backstop across these lines of effort." He emphasized the necessity of implementing all discussed measures, concluding, "It is key that everything discussed be implemented. Russia must come to learn that its war will never be normalised."
