Recent Russian Assaults Claim Lives Across Ukraine

Ukrainian authorities have reported that at least four individuals were killed and ten others sustained injuries in a new wave of Russian attacks. These incidents transpired just one day after Moscow launched what has been described as its most lethal series of assaults on Kyiv in the current year.

In the Sumy region, situated near the border, a Russian drone strike on a residential apartment complex led to the deaths of two women, an elderly man, and a toddler. Three additional individuals were injured in the incident, according to Oleh Hryhorov, the head of the regional military administration, who provided details on Friday.

Separately, a missile attack targeted Kryvyi Rih, a central city within the Dnipropetrovsk region. Oleksandr Vilkul, who leads the city's defense council, announced via Telegram that seven people were injured. Vilkul further elaborated that two of the injured women remain hospitalized. The attack caused damage to nine apartment blocks, a school building, a company, several shops, garages, and approximately ten vehicles. Additionally, gas supply was disrupted for two residential buildings. Kryvyi Rih, a significant industrial center and the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has been a frequent target throughout the conflict.

Kyiv Observes Day of Mourning Amid Rising Death Toll

These latest Russian attacks followed a substantial barrage on the capital, Kyiv, the previous night. The death toll from that major assault has now climbed to at least 30 people, according to official reports. Consequently, Kyiv observed a day of mourning on Friday in response to what has been identified as the deadliest Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital this year.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a condemnation of Russia's extensive bombardments and reiterated his call for a ceasefire. Stephane Dujarric, Guterres's spokesperson, emphasized that “Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure wherever they occur are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately.”

Despite international condemnation, the Kremlin has maintained its unyielding stance, pledging to intensify “pressure” on Kyiv. Ukraine's air force reported significant defensive successes, stating that it had intercepted 476 out of 496 drones and 48 out of 74 missiles, including challenging-to-intercept ballistic projectiles launched by Russia. In response to the attacks, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, indicated her intention to propose new sanctions against Moscow. President Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukrainian forces would “definitely” retaliate for the overnight Wednesday-to-Thursday attack, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin had “been preparing this massive strike against Ukraine for some time now.”

Ukrainian Counterattacks Target Russian Border Regions

In a reciprocal escalation, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia’s border regions and occupied Ukrainian territories resulted in at least five fatalities overnight into Friday. Several industrial sites also sustained damage in these strikes.

For months, Ukraine has been targeting Russia's energy infrastructure in an effort to impede Moscow’s military capabilities, leading to fuel shortages across Russia. President Putin has commented that these attacks are intended to foster public discord. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down a total of 155 Ukrainian drones overnight from Thursday to Friday over its regions and the annexed Crimea.

In the Russian-occupied southern Zaporizhzhia region, Yevgeny Balitsky, the Kremlin-appointed governor, reported that three individuals died following “attacks on our peaceful settlements and the region’s civilian infrastructure.” Valentin Demidov, the mayor of Belgorod, a city in western Russia, confirmed that a woman died in her car after being struck by shrapnel. He added that water and power supplies in the city, located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the Ukrainian border, had been disrupted. Earlier on Friday, the Vesti news channel, citing local officials, reported a fire at an industrial facility after Ukraine attacked Belgorod and its surrounding areas with missiles.

Egor Kovalchuk, acting governor of Bryansk, another Russian border region, stated that a man died in a village following a drone attack. Additionally, a fire erupted at an industrial site in the western Smolensk region after a drone attack, though no injuries were reported, as announced by local governor Vasily Anokhin on Telegram. Russia’s defense ministry also announced on Friday that Russian troops had captured the village of Oleksandrivka, located in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region.
