Civilian Casualties Reported in Kharkiv and Donetsk Regions
Ukrainian officials have reported a series of Russian attacks resulting in fatalities and injuries, primarily in the northeastern Kharkiv region and Donetsk. Among the victims in Kharkiv were a pregnant woman and two other individuals, killed in overnight missile strikes on the town of Chuhuiv. These attacks also injured six people and caused significant damage to residential buildings and commercial properties, according to the regional prosecutor’s office.
In the city of Kharkiv, a drone assault wounded 16 people, including several children. Visual evidence shared by officials depicted a burning structure and multiple charred vehicles.
Further south, in the Donetsk region, two individuals were killed in separate incidents in Bilozerske and Druzhkivka. Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk state administration, also noted that 11 others sustained injuries in Sloviansk and Shabelkivka. These strikes follow a period of heightened activity, with Ukraine increasing its long-range drone attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, reportedly leading to fuel shortages in Russia, while Russia has maintained a campaign of large-scale air assaults on Ukraine.
Zelenskyy Engages in Diplomatic Push with US Envoys and European Leaders
Amidst ongoing hostilities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism regarding recent diplomatic engagements. On Monday, he described a phone conversation with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as "very positive." Zelenskyy conveyed his gratitude for their commitment to actively pursue diplomatic avenues in the coming weeks, aiming to de-escalate the conflict.
Speaking on X, President Zelenskyy acknowledged the global focus on events in Iran but emphasized that "our shared goal of peace in Europe remains on the agenda." These discussions with US envoys took place as Zelenskyy returned from London, where he had met with British, French, and German leaders to address strategies for ending the four-year conflict. He also reported a "substantive" discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron and indicated preparations for the upcoming G7 summit in France.
"I am grateful for their readiness to work as actively as possible in the coming weeks to reinvigorate diplomacy aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine."
A joint statement from United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed their "unwavering support" for Ukraine. The leaders reportedly discussed coordinating support for Ukraine through upcoming G7, NATO, and Coalition of the Willing summits. This coordination includes plans for increased pressure on Russia's war economy and enhanced military and defense assistance.
Reflections on Peace and Future Negotiations
In an interview with The Guardian, shared by Zelenskyy on X, the Ukrainian president offered a perspective on the internal dynamics within Russia regarding the conflict: "I think there are different people around Putin. Half of them want to continue this war. Half want to stop."
Last week, Zelenskyy had extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for an in-person meeting. However, at the International Economic Forum in St Petersburg on Friday, Putin dismissed the idea, stating there was "no point" in such a meeting without prior groundwork by experts to formulate a potential agreement.
