Trump Offers Assistance in Resolving Ukraine Conflict

Former United States President Donald Trump reportedly extended an offer to aid Russian President Vladimir Putin in resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This proposal was made during an extensive phone conversation lasting nearly 90 minutes, as confirmed by Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.

The call, which took place on Saturday, was held in anticipation of the forthcoming NATO summit in Ankara. Ushakov described the dialogue as "businesslike and quite constructive," noting that Trump expressed a willingness to work towards a swift resolution to the hostilities and to explore solutions for overcoming the crisis.

Ukrainian Response and NATO Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also engaged in a conversation with Trump on the same day. Zelenskyy shared via Telegram that they discussed the extensive 1,200-kilometer front line of the war. He indicated that there was a "real prospect" for ending the conflict, emphasizing that American involvement could play a critical role. Further discussions are anticipated at the NATO summit scheduled for the following week, with leaders from 32 countries, including Trump, expected to attend.

On the battlefield, progress has been stagnant for both sides, primarily due to the deployment of drones which impede heavy machinery and result in significant casualties. Ushakov accused Ukraine and its European allies of seeking to prolong and even escalate the conflict, citing long-range Ukrainian strikes on Russian targets, particularly those associated with the oil industry, which have caused fuel shortages in various Russian regions.

Conflicting Claims Over Strategic City

In a related development, Ushakov mentioned that Putin had described the Russian military as successfully advancing and liberating territories, claiming the recent capture of the strategic city of Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region. This claim was contested by Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s General Staff, who maintain that Ukrainian forces continue to control the city.

Diplomatic Efforts and Challenges

Despite Zelenskyy's previous invitation for a direct meeting with Putin, the Kremlin leader has declined such overtures. Meanwhile, Ushakov quoted Trump as indicating that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would persist in their efforts to mediate a settlement and were ready to revisit Moscow if necessary.

However, Ushakov noted that US diplomatic endeavors have encountered obstacles as Washington concentrates its attention on the ongoing conflict with Iran. Putin expressed optimism that American diplomacy in relation to Iran might eventually yield "mutually acceptable long-term solutions" regarding key settlement issues.
