High-Profile Prosecutor Steps Down

Febrie Adriansyah, Indonesia's chief prosecutor for special crimes, has tendered his resignation after police conducted searches at his residence and other associated properties. These operations reportedly led to the confiscation of gold bars and approximately $20 million in various currencies. The Attorney General's Office confirmed Adriansyah's departure on Saturday, stating that his resignation was intended to "maintain the integrity, objectivity, and neutrality of law enforcement."

Details of the Investigation

Authorities have not yet formally accused Febrie Adriansyah of any criminal offenses. However, on July 8 and 9, Jakarta and national police forces executed raids at no fewer than 12 locations and interviewed 15 individuals across Jakarta, South Tangerang, and Bogor. These actions are part of an ongoing probe into alleged corruption and bribery, which officials suspect may have contributed to recent electricity blackouts in several regions of the country.

The current investigations are reportedly connected to large-scale fraud scandals involving state-owned insurers, specifically Asabri and the now-defunct Jiwasraya life insurance company. Additionally, there are concerns regarding alleged collusion between state officials and mining companies, purportedly involved in supplying substandard coal to state-owned power plants.

Seized Assets and Allegations

During the raids, law enforcement officials seized 74 kilograms of gold bars, along with cash denominations in Indonesian rupiah, US dollars, Singapore dollars, and Saudi riyals, totaling an estimated $20 million. Police spokesman Budi Hermanto confirmed these details during a press briefing on Friday evening. Local media reports indicate that a substantial portion of these assets was discovered at a residence in Bogor, which is believed to belong to Febrie Adriansyah.

Prior to his resignation, Febrie Adriansyah addressed reporters on Friday morning, denying any wrongdoing. He expressed confusion regarding the rationale behind his investigation in connection with the power outages.

Febrie Adriansyah's Career and Cases

Febrie Adriansyah, aged 58, assumed the role of special crimes prosecutor in 2022, following an extensive career within Indonesia's legal system. Throughout his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing numerous high-profile cases. Until his recent resignation, Adriansyah was actively involved in a corruption investigation targeting the National Nutrition Agency. This agency is currently implementing President Prabowo Subianto's controversial free school meals program, which has drawn criticism from many Indonesians who allege it is susceptible to corruption.

Furthermore, Febrie Adriansyah previously supervised a corruption case against Nadiem Makarim, the founder of the payment startup Gojek. Makarim received a 10-year sentence in June, a verdict that has been widely criticized by international observers and human rights organizations as a miscarriage of justice. Adriansyah also investigated corruption allegations against Thomas Lembong, a former trade minister who has since become a government critic, and a case involving illegal fuel imports at the state energy firm Pertamina.
