Chinese President Xi Jinping recently hosted Myanmar's leader, Min Aung Hlaing, in Beijing, signaling robust support for the Myanmar government. The visit, which included high-level discussions, aimed to strengthen the bilateral relationship and chart future cooperative endeavors between the two nations.
During their meeting, President Xi Jinping conveyed China's commitment to advancing the historical 'brotherly friendship' between their peoples and enhancing 'comprehensive strategic cooperation.' This sentiment was reported by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, highlighting the significant nature of the diplomatic engagement.
Deepening Bilateral Ties Amidst International Scrutiny
China stands as a prominent international ally to Min Aung Hlaing's administration, which has faced significant international isolation since the military assumed power in a 2021 coup. This event led to the overthrow of the democratically elected government, previously led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and ignited a civil conflict against pro-democracy forces, predominantly located in northern Myanmar's remote regions.
President Xi emphasized China's stance on internal affairs, stating, 'China supports all parties in Myanmar advancing peace and reconciliation through dialogue, achieving lasting stability in northern Myanmar,' according to China's state news agency Xinhua. He further noted the enduring resilience of the two countries' relationship, asserting that they have 'stood together through thick and thin.'
This meeting marks Min Aung Hlaing's second encounter with President Xi within a year, following his attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China, last August. While Min Aung Hlaing's initial foreign visit after assuming the presidency in April was to India, subsequent engagements with China have been interpreted by some analysts as indicative of a deepening bond with Beijing, potentially bolstering his international standing.
Addressing Cross-Border Challenges and Economic Cooperation
A point of discussion during the talks involved the growing issue of online gambling and internet scam operations originating from Myanmar, a problem also observed in other Southeast Asian nations. President Xi underscored the necessity for both countries to maintain a 'hard crackdown' on telecommunications fraud, online gambling, and drug trafficking, recognizing these as shared challenges requiring collaborative solutions.
The state visit commenced with a formal welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, followed by a closed-door meeting between the two leaders that lasted less than an hour. Subsequently, President Xi and Min Aung Hlaing oversaw the signing of eighteen cooperation agreements. These agreements span various sectors, including cross-border transportation within the Greater Mekong subregion, free trade initiatives, provisions for natural disaster assistance, health cooperation, and media exchanges.
China's Strategic Investments in Myanmar
China has made substantial investments in Myanmar through its Belt and Road Initiative, a global strategy focused on infrastructure development. Key projects include an oil and gas pipeline that traverses Myanmar and a planned deep-sea port. A notable challenge for these projects is their location within active conflict zones, which have experienced threats and attacks since the 2021 coup led by Min Aung Hlaing.
The comprehensive nature of the agreements and the high-level diplomatic engagement underscore China's continued commitment to its strategic partnership with Myanmar, addressing both economic development and regional stability concerns.
