White Nationalist Group Stages Marches in Washington, D.C., Area During Independence Day Festivities

On July 4, members of the white nationalist organization Patriot Front were observed conducting marches in the vicinity of the United States capital. Many participants reportedly obscured their faces with white fabric masks and sunglasses. Social media platforms circulated videos depicting rows of individuals, dressed in khaki pants, khaki baseball caps, and dark blue shirts, utilizing the Washington, D.C., underground rail system and boarding metro cars. These individuals were subsequently filmed marching in formation through areas such as New Carrollton, Maryland, which is part of the capital’s metropolitan region. Other elements of the group were documented in front of the US Capitol Building.

The marchers were seen carrying various items, including US flags, drums, and shields. A number of participants also displayed Confederate flags. The Confederate flag is a symbol that some associate with Southern identity, while others view it as a representation of racial animosity. Historically, the Confederacy attempted to secede from the United States in 1861, primarily to preserve the institution of slavery, an action that initiated the American Civil War.

Coinciding with Independence Day

The demonstration by the Patriot Front occurred concurrently with the Fourth of July, a federal holiday in the United States commemorating Independence Day. This year marked a particularly significant anniversary, 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. According to the Patriot Front’s Telegram channel, the group had anticipated the participation of over 400 white nationalists in the day’s activities. Throughout the day, the channel reportedly reposted videos of the marchers, some of whom were heard chanting “Reclaim America” to the rhythm of a drum. The group’s official website appeals to individuals “born to this nation of our European race” to assert their “right to cultural independence.”

Patriot Front's Ideology and Origins

Experts affiliated with George Washington University’s Program on Extremism have characterized the Patriot Front as a fascist organization. They describe its primary objective as the creation of a “white ethnostate in the United States.” The organization is understood to have been established in 2017, following the “Unite the Right” rally that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. That particular event saw the convergence of white supremacists and neo-Nazis. During the Charlottesville rally, James Alex Fields Jr., a white supremacist, drove his vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters, resulting in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The response of then-President Donald Trump to the Charlottesville incident drew considerable criticism. At the time, Trump stated, “You had some very bad people in that group, but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides.” Critics have frequently asserted that the Trump administration’s rhetoric and actions, including the dissemination of unverified theories such as the ‘great replacement theory’—a belief positing that white Christians are being systematically replaced by minority groups—have potentially emboldened such organizations.

Reactions and Broader Context

Throughout his two terms, Donald Trump has faced condemnation for perceived failures to unequivocally reject white nationalist groups. For instance, in 2022, Trump dined at his Mar-a-Lago resort with musician Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) and white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Both individuals have been subject to criticism for making anti-Semitic remarks. Trump’s comment on the dinner was, “We had dinner on Tuesday evening with many members present on the back patio. The dinner was quick and uneventful.”

Accusations of racism have also been leveled against Trump personally. Earlier this year, a video depicting former Democratic President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama as apes was posted to Trump’s Truth Social account. The White House subsequently clarified that a staff member, not Trump himself, was responsible for sharing the video. In response to the recent Patriot Front march, Senator Ed Markey was among those who called upon officials to condemn the demonstration. Markey stated on social media, “We cannot be silent in the face of white nationalists marching in our nation’s capitol. From Massachusetts to Washington D.C. hatred and bigotry have no place here.” The presence of the Patriot Front group in the D.C. metropolitan area during a national holiday has reignited discussions surrounding the visibility and activities of white nationalist organizations in the United States.
