USMNT Faces Pivotal Group D Encounter
The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) is set to clash with Australia in a critical Group D fixture in Seattle. This match, scheduled for Friday at 19:00 GMT, holds significant implications for both teams' aspirations of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup 2026. Following an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening game, the USMNT has an opportunity to secure qualification and potentially claim the top spot in the group with a match remaining.
However, Australia, known as the Socceroos, also enters this encounter with momentum. They delivered a surprising 2-0 win against Turkiye, showcasing a disciplined counterattacking strategy. The outcome of the Seattle showdown, coupled with the result of the later game between Paraguay and Turkiye in Santa Clara (03:00 GMT), will ultimately determine the standings in Group D.
Christian Pulisic's Availability in Question
A significant storyline heading into the match revolves around the fitness of USMNT talisman Christian Pulisic. The AC Milan playmaker sustained a left calf injury during training before the opening game against Paraguay. Despite the injury, Pulisic started the match in Los Angeles and played a crucial role in the team's early success.
He was instrumental in the seventh-minute opening goal, deftly navigating through defenders to find Weston McKennie, whose cross led to an own goal by Paraguay's Damian Bobadilla. Pulisic then provided the assist for Folarin Balogun's goal just after the half-hour mark. With the USA leading 3-0 at halftime, Pulisic was substituted at the interval, replaced by Sebastian Berhalter, as a precautionary measure.
During Thursday's training session at the University of Washington, the 27-year-old was observed with his calf still strapped, and he did not participate in the on-field activities. Instead, he worked with the backroom staff in the gym, fueling speculation about his readiness for the Australia game.
USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed Pulisic's condition during his pre-match press conference, stating, "He's evolving. He's much better from Friday. We'll see. If we see he's not available, he will be available for the next game [against Turkiye on June 26]." Pochettino commended Pulisic's dedication, adding, "I think he's doing a massive effort trying to be ready. I think for every single player that love their country it's an amazing opportunity to enjoy and to help the team to perform and to win games. When this type of thing happens (it's) always painful, but I think Christian is strong and with great mentality and is doing a fantastic effort to try to be ready as soon as possible."
Teammate Weston McKennie echoed the sentiment, expressing hope for Pulisic's return: "Hopefully he can be there. I know he really wants to be and he's doing everything that he can and the staff is doing everything that they can as well."
Potential Replacements for Pulisic
Should Pulisic be deemed unfit to play, Coach Pochettino has several options to consider for his replacement. Folarin Balogun is expected to lead the attack, especially after his two-goal performance against Paraguay. His goals marked the first time a USMNT player scored a brace at a World Cup since Bert Patenaude's hat-trick 96 years ago, also against Paraguay. The 4-1 victory also matched the US's largest winning margin at a World Cup, a record set during the inaugural tournament in 1930, where they finished third.
Giovanni Reyna, who entered the Paraguay match late and scored a spectacular goal to seal the 4-1 win, is another strong contender. However, Reyna has not played more than 60 minutes in a match for either his club, Borussia Monchengladbach, or his country since last December, raising questions about his match fitness for a full ninety minutes.
Timothy Weah, who made a notable impact after coming on for Sergino Dest, could also be deployed on the right wing or in a more central supporting role for Balogun, potentially requiring McKennie to shift to the left side of the attack. Sebastian Berhalter, who replaced Pulisic against Paraguay, offers set-piece expertise that would be missed in Pulisic's absence. Other alternatives include industrious wingers Brenden Aaronson of Leeds United and Alejandro Zendejas from Club America, though neither has been a regular starter under Pochettino.
Pochettino confirmed the coaching staff's thorough evaluation process: "We are evaluating all the possibilities, just in case, and then we will decide when we have the confirmation in one or another direction."
USMNT's Qualification Scenarios
The path to the knockout stages is clear for the USMNT. A victory against Australia would guarantee them a top-two finish in Group D, securing a place in the Round of 32 with six points. Furthermore, if a US win is combined with either a draw in the Turkiye vs. Paraguay match or a Paraguay victory, the USMNT would clinch first place in Group D.
Group stage standings are initially determined by points, followed by head-to-head results for teams level on points. Goal difference is only used as a tie-breaker when teams have drawn against each other. The winner of Group D will advance to play in the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 1, facing a third-placed team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J, which could include Bosnia, Ecuador, Sweden, Norway, or Algeria.
Australia's Young Star: Nestory Irankunda
Australia also has its sights set on qualification, and a key figure in their recent success is young sensation Nestory Irankunda. In their opening match in Vancouver, the 20-year-old made history by becoming Australia's youngest-ever World Cup scorer with a cool finish in the 27th minute. He also became the first overseas-born Australian to score on the global stage. Irankunda was part of the youngest starting XI at a World Cup since France in 2018.
Born in a Tanzanian refugee camp in 2006 after his parents fled civil war in Burundi, Irankunda moved to Australia as an infant. He developed through the youth system at A-League side Adelaide United, where his impressive tally of 16 goals and eight assists earned him a surprise move to German giants Bayern Munich in 2024. Although he did not make a first-team appearance, he trained alongside world-class players like Harry Kane.
Irankunda debuted for Australia in June 2024 during a World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh, scoring his first international goal in his second appearance against Palestine. He later had a loan spell at Grasshopper Zurich in Switzerland before securing a permanent move to English side Watford, seeking consistent playing time to solidify his World Cup spot. He played 42 games for the Hornets in the Championship, contributing four goals and five assists, and gained attention for his Michael Jackson-inspired goal celebrations, often donning a white glove.
Australia's Qualification Hopes
Similar to the USMNT, Australia's path to the knockout stages is straightforward. A victory against the United States in Seattle would guarantee their progression. If this win is coupled with a draw between Turkiye and Paraguay, or a Turkiye victory, Australia would secure first place in Group D with a game to spare. Regardless of the final group stage results, Australia would finish above Turkiye based on their head-to-head record, which takes precedence over goal difference in this competition.
