Federal Probe Targets New York Coffee Establishment
The United States Department of Justice has commenced a civil rights investigation into a New York-based coffee chain, Poetica Coffee, following its public declaration that it would refuse service to a Democratic lawmaker. The controversy stems from the coffee chain's stance on Representative Dan Goldman's support for Israel, which it articulated in a series of social media posts.
Harmeet K. Dhillon, the top civil rights prosecutor within the Justice Department, confirmed the initiation of the investigation on Monday. Dhillon, an appointee of President Donald Trump, stated that the probe was ordered after Poetica Coffee, an Uzbek-inspired chain with seven locations in Brooklyn and the East Village, explicitly stated on social media that Representative Goldman was unwelcome at its establishments.
“These actions are not only reprehensible, they’re potentially illegal,” Dhillon posted on X. “The Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation, and will bring an enforcement action if warranted.”
Incident and Public Statement
The incident that triggered the public outcry and subsequent federal investigation occurred on Sunday when Representative Goldman visited one of Poetica Coffee's cafes with his daughter. Following his visit, Poetica Coffee issued a strong statement across its Facebook and Instagram platforms, accompanied by a photograph of Goldman at its Lorimer Street, Brooklyn branch.
The posts from Poetica Coffee directly addressed Goldman, stating, “We see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?” The company continued its statement with a clear declaration of its policy: “See, here at Poetica, we don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers, or anyone in between. Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away.” The coffee chain also indicated that it had refunded the $9.82 Goldman spent and instructed him not to return.
As of the time of reporting, Poetica Coffee and its founder, Parviz Mukhamadkulov, have not responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.
Lawmaker's Response and Legal Ambiguity
In an interview with CNN on Monday, Representative Goldman expressed his disappointment over the incident, remarking on a perceived decline in societal decorum and appropriate discourse. However, despite being the target of the coffee chain's actions, Goldman stated that he did not believe Poetica Coffee should be subjected to a federal investigation.
“I would rather they spend their time and resources investigating anti-Semitism against people who do not have a platform that I do, who are not elected officials,” Goldman commented.
The legal basis for the Justice Department's potential enforcement action against Poetica Coffee remains a point of discussion. Both federal and New York state laws prohibit businesses from refusing service based on protected characteristics such such as race, religion, sex, and national origin. However, these protections typically do not extend to political beliefs or ideologies, which could complicate any legal proceedings related to this case.
Goldman's Stance on Israel
Representative Dan Goldman is recognized as a prominent supporter of Israel within the Democratic Party. He has publicly identified himself as a “proud Zionist and steadfast supporter” of the country. This stance has drawn both support and criticism, particularly in the context of ongoing geopolitical events.
Goldman is currently facing a primary challenge from Brad Lander, who is known for his critical views on Israel. Campaign finance records indicate that Goldman has received nearly $195,000 in donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated organizations during the current election cycle. AIPAC is a significant lobbying group that supports pro-Israel candidates for public office.
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Goldman has publicly denied allegations of genocide, though he has characterized the conditions in the enclave as “horrific” and has advocated for an end to the hostilities. He has also been critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing his government as “extremist” and voicing opposition to the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
The Justice Department's investigation will likely examine the specifics of Poetica Coffee's refusal of service and the applicable legal precedents to determine if any civil rights violations occurred, particularly given the nuanced legal landscape surrounding political beliefs as a basis for service refusal.
