UN Investigation Uncovers Atrocities in Sudan's Darfur Region
A recent investigation by the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan has revealed that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, engaged in genocidal activities in the western city of el-Fasher. The report, released on Wednesday, indicates that the RSF conducted mass killings, gang rapes, and induced starvation as deliberate tactics in their campaign against civilians.
Systematic Violence Constitutes Genocide
The findings of the UN mission build on a prior report from February, which had already noted signs of genocidal actions. The systematic approach of the RSF, particularly during and after their siege of North Darfur's capital, has been characterized as genocide. Survivors reported incidents of rape occurring in proximity to the bodies of slain civilians, including their family members.
The report also highlighted the RSF's use of starvation as a weapon by enforcing a lengthy blockade on the city, obstructing essential relief supplies, and attacking food production centers. Despite these allegations, the RSF has denied any wrongdoing, suggesting that the accusations are fabricated by adversaries while making counter-claims against them.
Warnings of Further Catastrophe
Mohamed Chande Othman, chairman of the mission, emphasized the urgent lessons from these findings, particularly for el-Obeid, another city currently surrounded by RSF forces. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has previously issued warnings of a developing catastrophe in el-Obeid, with documented cases of summary executions, abductions, torture, and sexual violence in the area.
The international spotlight, which largely focused on Khartoum and Darfur during much of Sudan's civil conflict, is now increasingly directed towards el-Obeid and the broader Kordofan region, where fighting has escalated. The UN Human Rights Council has condemned the violence and has initiated an urgent investigation into reported abuses in this region.
International Concerns and Warnings
Countries such as the United Kingdom have expressed concern over potential large-scale atrocities, as RSF forces continue to amass around el-Obeid, a city now sheltering approximately half a million people, including over 83,000 internally displaced individuals.
The February report by the fact-finding mission had already concluded that the mass killings of non-Arab communities in el-Fasher bore the indicators of genocide. The latest report reinforces these findings, presenting additional evidence that the RSF's widespread and systematic actions, including extensive killings, mass rapes, and induced starvation, were part of a targeted policy.
"The patterns we documented in el-Fasher – including encirclement, attacks on civilian infrastructure, restrictions on humanitarian access, and widespread abuses against civilians – serve as a stark warning," stated Mohamed Chande Othman. "The international community must heed these lessons and act to prevent further catastrophe," he added.
