The scarcity of equipment also means that existing boards are treated as invaluable treasures. Ustadh, clutching a surfboard nearly two decades old, emphasizes the importance of preserving their gear. 'As surfers, we treat these boards like great treasures to us, because losing any board or having it confiscated threatens our ability to continue in this sport,' he states. The devastating impact of the conflict has also taken a toll on the surfing community itself. Khalil Abu Jiyab, 18, recalls a time before the war when there was a team of 17 surfers in Gaza. The widespread destruction, displacement of populations, and the prevalence of temporary shelters have undoubtedly disrupted many aspects of life, including recreational activities.
Despite these profound challenges, Abu Jiyab clings to his dreams. Having surfed for 13 years, he admits that his hopes have been 'almost shattered,' yet he still harbors the aspiration of one day competing in surfing events outside the Gaza Strip. For many, the sea represents the last bastion of hope and escape. Abu Jiyab articulates this sentiment poignantly: 'There’s nothing in Gaza you can really look forward to except the sea. The only outlet in Gaza is the sea; without it, life would have vanished long ago.'
