Hossam Hassan's World Cup Platform for Palestine
During a press conference leading up to Egypt's World Cup round-of-16 match against Argentina, Egyptian national football team coach Hossam Hassan delivered an impassioned address concerning the plight of Palestinians. This intervention followed his earlier dedication of the team's knockout stage victory to the Palestinian people, an act that included waving the Palestinian flag at the global sporting event.
Hassan diverted from typical pre-match discussions, dedicating over four minutes of his Monday press conference to highlight the humanitarian crisis. He articulated a strong sentiment, stating, "If there is anyone in the world who does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they are not human — whether they are Arab, European, or American." His remarks were met with applause from many members of the assembled media.
Humanitarian Call and Global Empathy
When questioned about his decision to display the Palestinian flag after Egypt's penalty shootout win against Australia, Hassan described it as a "simply a human reaction." He drew a comparison to global responses to animal welfare issues, noting that widespread concern is often shown for animals, yet human suffering on a large scale sometimes elicits less international outcry. "Everywhere in the world, including in Europe or America, if someone hurts an animal, we see animal rights being defended and the whole world reacts," Hassan commented. "It has become normal to hear that two or three thousand people die in a single day because of a missile."
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating over 73,066 fatalities, including more than 20,179 children, since October 7. Additionally, at least 463 deaths have been attributed to starvation, affecting 157 children. The displacement of over two million Palestinians within Gaza further underscores the severe humanitarian impact of the hostilities.
Globally, the situation has ignited numerous pro-Palestinian demonstrations, with various public figures, including athletes like Spain's Lamine Yamal, expressing their support. Hassan's comments resonated with this broader movement, emphasizing a universal call for human dignity and rights.
Beyond Football: A Message of Respect and Ambition
Despite the immediate focus on the upcoming match against a formidable opponent like Argentina, Hassan used the opportunity to convey a broader message. "Regardless of religion… I am a human before being Arab or anything else. My message, through football, is this: Please, just as FIFA’s slogan calls for respect among us, I hope there will be respect for people’s right to live," he stated, connecting his plea to the values often promoted within international sports.
Transitioning to the sporting challenge ahead, Hassan expressed confidence in his team's capabilities, despite acknowledging that Egypt was not considered the favorite against the reigning World Cup champions. "My dreams have no limits. My ambitions have no limits. I promise that we will do everything to live up to the expectations [of fans]," he affirmed. He also rejected the notion of his team being underdogs, asserting, "We’re no underdogs. We’re big in every respect. We are a civilisation that is 7,000 years old, even more than 7,000 years."
Hassan acknowledged the challenge of facing a team with players like Lionel Messi but maintained that his squad was not intimidated. "We know we are playing against the World Cup holders and one of the greatest players ever [Messi], but we do not fear them," he said. He concluded by highlighting the significant responsibility his team carries, representing not only Egypt but also the broader Arab world and Africa. "[The] responsibility makes us focus on ourselves and on what we can produce on the field," he added. "We have a responsibility towards Egypt and the Arab world and Africa. We represent all of them."
