The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg-led armed group, claimed responsibility for the attack on the town of Anefis, located in the northeastern Kidal region. A spokesperson for the FLA, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, confirmed this to Reuters, noting that the group targeted the town early on Saturday.
In response to previous attacks in April, government and Russian forces had been deployed to Anefis. During those earlier incidents, the FLA, along with a regional al-Qaeda affiliate, managed to seize control of Kidal town. The ongoing unrest is part of a broader conflict involving various armed groups, including those linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL, as well as separatist factions seeking independence for northern Mali.
Continued Resistance and Uncertainty
According to Ramadane, the armed groups had taken control of several positions in Anefis, though fighting was reportedly ongoing within the town. An Anefis resident corroborated this, stating that armed factions were present in the town, but the military continued to resist, maintaining their camp.
Both Anefis and Aguelhok remain significant for Mali's military, as they are the only places in the Kidal region where the army has maintained a presence since the April attacks. Meanwhile, in the central city of Gao, a local official reported that military camps had come under fire from gunfire and rockets since before dawn, though the responsible parties were not immediately identified.
In Sevare, another central location, explosions were heard around 5 am. The origin of these explosions remains unknown, but shortly thereafter, aircraft were observed flying over the area, as stated by a security source.

The attack on Kenieroba included targeting a major prison complex, as reported by a prisoner inside the facility.
